Westar Energy has completed the purchase of the Spring Creek power plant, a 300 megawatt gas-fired power plant in Logan County, Okla.
Westar (NYSE: WR) bought the power plant for $53 million from ONEOK. It is a peaking plant, which means that it will operate only for brief periods, primarily in the summer, to meet growing customer demand. The Spring Creek plant was built by ONEOK in 2001.
In August, Westar Energy announced plans to begin construction next spring on a peaking plant in Lyon County. When the plant goes online in the summer of 2008, it will have an initial generating capacity of up to 300 megawatts, with additional capacity to be added in phases, bringing the total capacity to 600 megawatts.
The total investment in the plant will be about $330 million.
